So as many of you know, we have been traveling for 5 weeks, and after my college visit in Oklahoma and visiting our friends in Texas, we left for New Orleans. It took us eight hours to get there from Fort Worth, so we got in at 1 am.
Our first day, we went to explore downtown; and it was very different than I expected. It was beautiful, and I loved some of the pretty buildings, but the town was also very dirty. I guess that just comes with a busy city that is always partying, but it was a bit of a shock.
A friend recommended that we try Acme Oyster House, and we really liked it. They had some different Cajun dishes; I had jambalaya. We also tried fried alligator, and it was terrific! We walked around downtown and saw Decatur street, Jackson square, and the St. Louis Cathedral. After that we had to try some beignets; so, we went to Café De Monde. The beignets were delicious, we ate them in seconds!
We walked around for a bit and ended up stumbling across the Audubon Aquarium, and we decided to check it out. We loved it; they had some remarkable sea life and other animals as well. We got to touch stingrays, and the boys loved seeing the sharks and alligators. They also had a fantastic bird room, which was so fun; the birds were everywhere and landed on our shoulders and bags.
The next day we went to the National WWll Museum, and I have to say this was probably one of my favorite days of the whole trip. We got there just before they opened and got tickets to see their movie, which was awesome. It gave an excellent timeline and overview of the war, which helped us throughout the day.
We also did their dog tag program, which you have a card and scan it, and pick a person at the beginning of the day. At each scanner around the museum, you learn more about what your person did in the war.
We loved exploring the Road to Berlin and the Road to Tokyo and seeing two sides of the war. We also did the USS Tang simulation, which was really awesome and gave a lot of insight to submarine’s place it the war.
The museum made the war more personal to me and helped me be more grateful to the people who made America what it is today. As a history lover, I could have spent multiple days exploring and still not learn everything there is to know about the war.
New Orleans was an excellent place, and we loved getting to experience new things while we were there.
